Celebration of World Egg Day 2022

World Egg Day is held annually on the second Friday of October. This year world egg day is celebrated on October 14 with the theme ‘Eggs for a better life’. This day celebrates the incredible power of egg in supporting good human health outcomes and its importance for people’s livelihood as well.

Eggs are excellent source of nutrients with at least 13 different essential nutrients in single egg. It is considered as a protein power house and provides numerous benefits to person’s health. A person of any age, child, adult or elderly can enjoy the delicious taste and multiple health benefits of eggs without any side effects.

To promote the various advantages of eggs and to enable everyone to celebrate all that is great about the egg, IVSA Paklihawa have presented some facts about eggs on their social media. 

Some of the facts presented on social media are:

  • An average hen lays 300 to 325 eggs per year

  • It takes a chicken 24 to 26 hours to produce an egg

  • An egg shell can have as many as 17000 pores

  • A hen turns her egg nearly 50 times a day to keep the yolk from sticking to the side

  • Egg lack vitamin C

  • One egg has only 75 calories but 7 grams of high-quality protein, 5 grams of fat, and 16 grams of saturated fat, along with iron, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids

  • There is more protein in a cooked egg than raw eggs.

  • Egg yolks are one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D

  • Kiwis lay the largest eggs in relation to their body size of any species of bird

  • China is the biggest egg supplier in the world. The US comes second, producing approximately 4 times less.

  • Duck eggs are higher in fat than better for baking

  • Breed determines eggshell colour. Commercial eggs are brown or white, but some breeds can also lay blue, green, or pink eggs.

  • Brown eggs are more expensive than hens that lay them are larger and require more feed

  • Egg shells and yolk color can vary but have no effect on taste or quality

  • 427 omelettes in 30 minutes. The guinness world record for omelette making is held by Howard Helmer.

  • The largest omelette in the world at the time, with 128.5 m2 area, is made with 160,000 eggs in Yokohama, Japan.

  • The egg cartoon is invented by Joseph Coyle in Smithers, British Columbia.

  • Eggshells are great as fertiliser. Sprinkle them in your garden for pest control and seed starters.
