LIVE DISCUSSION ON "ISSUES RELATED TO MENTAL HEALTH AND MENTAL WELLBEING"

On 4th June, 2021, Standing Committee on Wellness (SCoW) International Veterinary Students' Association (IVSA) Paklihawa organized a webinar on "ISSUES RELATED TO MENTAL HEALTH AND MENTAL WELLBEING" focusing an open discussion on harmful stereotypes about mental illness and other mental health conditions.

This session was inaggurated by Ms Samikshya Bhusal (ExCo Member, IVSA Paklihawa), moderated by Mr Nadim Khadka (Scow Member, IVSA Paklihawa)and the guest speaker was Prof. Dr Vidya Dev Sharma (Dept. Of Psychiatry and Mental Health, Institute of Medicine, Ktm, Nepal). For this session, IVSA Paklihawa had previously released a google document form entitled "Pour Your Heart Out" where the respondents were able to submit their queries and all those things that keep them away from achieving a happy life. These queries were selected for the open discussion in the webinar.

Prof. Dr Sharma addressed all the queries that were submitted in the google form and gave suggestions to deal with them and choices to choose a happier life by evaluating the social, medical and pshychological aspectes of different cases mentioned anonymously.

 

Dr. Sharma explained about the problems erected due to the generation gap between the parents and their children. He talked about the personal space need by growing up children and the irritation felt by these children towards the boundaries set by the parents. He also elaborated on how the breakup in any relationship makes people strong, mature and aware of the toxic people. In the reply of the query related to domestic violence, Dr. Sharma requested the questioner to ask for help in case her husband is an alcoholic. He also made her alert from the risky behaviors and habits of such person. Further, he put forward his views related to the situations of people’s around the world in the midst of this pandemic. And he suggested keeping oneself busy with any activities and their aim of life. He also urge everyone not to believe on all the fake news shown by social media related to COVID. Further, Dr. Sharma suggested all the sons, daughter and daughter-in-law not to avoid the views and perception of their aged parents. He too recommended them to make the involvement of their parents in every household activity if they want and requested not to set their boundaries for parents.

The session was performed in the online mode where it was streaming live on Facebook and You Tube. The audience also addressed their queries on the comment box of the different social media platforms. The session was technically supported by Young Professionals for Agriculture Development (YPARD) Nepal. The program lasted for more than one hour and forty five minutes. The program was formally ended with some remarkable words from Mr. Abhishek Khadka (Program Officer, YPARD Asia and Pacific)
