Programs organized by IVSA Nepal at Local Level (2013/14)

1) Free Rabies Vaccination Camp

International Veterinary Students’ Association(IVSA) Nepal in collaboration with Rotary Club of Narayangarh, Rotaract Club of Narayangarh, and Agriculture and Forestry University(AFU) successfully organized a Free Rabies Vaccination Camp at 2 different places:Mangalpur-6 and Fulbari-6 on World Rabies Day(September 28,2014).The students from Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science(IAAS) and Agriculture and Forestry University(AFU) offered their volunteer service in vaccinating 125 pets(98 dogs,25 cats and 2 monkeys).The program was an effort to prevent human and animals Rabies and create awareness about the importance of vaccination by means of a camp.The program was co-ordinated by Exchange of IVSA Nepal Sirjan Bastola.

2) Guest Lecture on Health Care, Training and Management of Elephants

On December 13 2013, a Guest Lecture on “Health Care, Training and Management of Elephants” was conducted at Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS) by IVSA Nepal. The program was facilitated by the foreign guest speakers: 1) Dr. Susan Mikota (Director of Veterinary Programs and Research, Elephant Care International,U.S.A) 2) Helena Telkanranta (President of Working Elephant Program of Asia(WEPA) ) President of IVSA Nepal Sudhir Yadav also gave his presentation about his personal experience on Feeding and Care of Elephants at Elephant Breeding Center,Sauraha.

3) Awareness Program on World Tuberculosis Day

IVSA Nepal organized a day Awareness Program on World Tuberculosis Day (March 24,2014) at Sauraha, Chitwan.IVSA President Sudhir Yadav and Dr. Suraj Subedi talked on the zoonotic aspects of Tuberculosis.The participants of the program, Veterinary students from Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science( IAAS) and Agriculture and Forestry University(AFU) were made aware of the current scenario of cases of Elephant Tuberculosis in Chitwan National Park of Nepal, where elephants have been bound to contract Mycobacteria from human.Similarly,the speakers also talked about the cases of buffalo T.B in villages of Chitwan and their chance of transmission to human through infected milk.

4) PPR Vaccination and Anti-Parasitic camp

International Veterinary Students’ Association (IVSA) Nepal in association with Rotary Club of Narayangarh and Rotaract Club of Naryangarh organised a free PPR vaccination and Parasitic Medication camp at Sharadanagar-3, Gurung Chowk,Chitwan on March 26,2014. .The program was aimed for the benefits of the local farmers by immunizing their goats and sheep against epidemics of PPR as well as against ecto and endo parasites. PPR is a viral disease of goats and sheep causing high morbidity and mortality and incurs high economic loss. Similarly, the epidemic of parasitic infestation also causes loss due to decreased production and high mortality. Hence, both these problems have to be addressed and solved for the benefit of the farmers. Around 400 animals (270 goats and 130 sheep) were vaccinated and administered anti-parasitic injections and around 150 households got benefitted in the program. The program was co-ordinated by Yogendra Raj Pant. The Veterinary students from Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) and Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science(IAAS),Rampur were involved in vaccination and medication.

5) General Pet Health and Free Rabies Vaccination Camp

International Veterinary Student’s Association (IVSA) Nepal, Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU), Rotary club of Narayangarh and Rotaract Club of Narayangarh jointly organised a “Free General Pet Health and Free Rabies Vaccination Camp” at Shivanagar, Chitwan on April 4,2014(World Health Day). Companion animals especially dogs are increasingly preferred by the pet lovers these days and often the dog owners hesitate to bring their dogs to Veterinary hospitals for health checkups. Rabies is another big issue, a fatal disease for both dogs and human exposed to it. Keeping it in a view, this camp was organised. Around 75 dogs were examined and vaccinated against rabies in the camp. The camp co-ordinated in the leadership of Yogendra Raj Pant benefitted around 60 households.

6) Free Animal Health Camp

With a view to provide free Veterinary service to low economy farmers and to provide case exposure to Veterinary Students, IVSA Nepal in collaboration with Namuna Village Development Committe, Dibyanagar and Livestock Insurance Sub-center,Dibyangar organized a Free Animal Health Camp at Dibyanagar,Chitwan on April 5,2014.Dr. Dinesh Kumar Singh, a reputed Field Veterinarian and Associate Professor,IAAS examined the health condition of the domestic animals brought by local farmers.The medicines were also distributed to the farmers free of cost and the medicines were sponsored by Pharmaceutical companies like Virbac and Mankind.The members from IVSA Nepal along with other final year Veterinary students from IAAS assisted Dr.Singh in examination and treatment. Dr.Singh managed to teach the students through theoretical and practical approach. A total of 64 cows, 58 buffaloes and 56 goats were examined successfully.36 faecal samples were examined under microscope for the presence of eggs of endo-parasites. Thus, the camp became beneficial to both the farmers and students.The camp was co-ordinated by Exchange Officer of IVSA Nepal Sirjan Bastola.

7) Environment Conservation and Leadership Workshop

To mark the “World Environment Day” with creative discussions and to regard the theme of this year “Raise your voice, not the sea level”, International Veterinary Students’ Association (IVSA) Nepal in collaboration with Rotaract Club of Narayangarh launched a workshop. A day “Environment Conservation and Leadership Workshop” was held on June 8, 2014 at Aasna Child Rehabilitation Home, Mangalpur-7, Chitwan. Sirjan Bastola was the resource person who highlighted on the key globally alarming environment issue-Global warming and Climate Change, and imparted the skills necessary for the youths to cope with this environmental scenario. He also made clear about the inter-relation between human health, animal health and einvrionment.23 school level students of the centre showed their participation and actively involved in the group discussion. The program was intended to enhance leadership skills in the students to address the global environmental problems. Mr.Bastola gave his words to thank the students for their enthusiastic participation and presented the Essay books to Managing Committee to facilitate the learning of the students.
