STUDY CIRCLE, SESSION-8 ENTITLED "COMMERCIAL POULTRY PRODUCTION"

On June 18, 2021, Friday, Standing Committee on Veterinary Education (SCoVE) International Veterinary Students' Association (IVSA) Paklihawa, continued its "StudyCircle" program by organising its eight-session entitled "Commercial Poultry Production". The program was executed via online mode on Zoom platform.

 The whole program was divided into two sessions, in the first session our guest speaker DrAnish Pathak (Hatchery Veterinarian at National Breeders Nepal Pvt. Ltd and Farm Consultant at Swostik Poultry farm Pvt Ltd & SS High Tech private ltd) presented his presentation and the second session was Question-Answer session. The program was inaugurated by Ms. SamikshyaBhusal (Ex-Co member, IVSA Paklihawa) and was handover to DrPathak for his presentation.

Dr. Pathak initiated his presentation with the selection of area for building a poultry farm. He suggested the isolated area far away from the danger of natural disasters. He highlighted on, "East- West orientation of the farm, about 20-30 ft (Max 40 ft) width of farm,housing systems of poultry(Free range rearing system, Intensive system), ventilation system in the farm etc. Further DrPathak elaborated the precautionary measures such as, disinfection, fumigation, feeder& drinking cleaning, maintaining the recommended temperature of the house, arrangement of brooding items, placement of litter, chick guard placement, complete sealing for rodents etc. that must be taken care in advance, 1 week before the arrival of chicks.

Then, Dr Pathak continued his presentation on "Brooding and Growing management", the time period of 2-3 Weeks after the arrival of chicks is called brooding phase and then it goes to growing phase until it starts laying eggs. According to Dr Pathak, brooding is done to prevent chick mortality and achieve maximum growth by providing warmth to chicks. And he said that brooding should be started at 95°F and be reduced by 5°F every week until 70 °F is attained. He also suggested to emphasize on continuous light, clean drinking water, daily monitoring , debeaking , deworming and vaccination (individual vaccination, drinking water vaccination and spray vaccination) for the proper brooding and growing management. And for the management of laying birds, Dr Pathak recommended; adequate ventilation, laying nest for birds, clean bedding materials in the laying nest, replacement of nesting materials, egg collection for 3-4 times a day, deworming, removal of dead birds and light management. He also added that, specific light duration (16-17hrs) and intensity (0.75  fc) is required for the proper egg production by layers. Finally, DrPathak concluded his presentation talking about the grading of chickens, nutrition requirement of poultry (Grower, starter, finisher) and biosecurity measures required in the poultry farm(isolation, Traffic control & sanitation).

The second session was Q/A session which was moderated by Mr. Anil Pokhrel (Treasurer, IVSA Paklihawa) where each and all queries of the participants were explained by Dr Anish Pathak in brief.

The session lasted for about one and half hours with 50 participants including Mr. AashishAdhiakri (President, IVSA Nepal), Mr. Pratik Kiju (Former Exchange officer, IVSA Nepal) & Mr. Swochalprakashshrestha (Past Treasurer, IVSA Nepal), Mr. Santosh Panta (Former President, IVSA Paklihawa), Mr AbhinashBhattarai (NVA Gandaki Province member) as guests. And at last Dr Anish Pathak put forward his few words regarding this program and whole session was concluded by Ms. Suvha Shree Sharma (President, IVSA Paklihawa) by summarizing the overall session.
